Participating in confirmation hearings for a Supreme Court nominee and introducing bills is not the typical routine for a new senator, but Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn. is not your typical member and he may not get into a routine anytime soon. "The first few days were very odd," Franken said. "I had the Sotomayor hearings immediately and had to prepare for those very quickly." He didn't slow down after the hearings. "Then, I just introduced this piece of legislation, the service dogs for wounded veterans and so that wasn't very routine," Franken said. He's working with Republicans now, but Franken admits things may change as Congress continues to debate more contentious issues like health care reform and climate change legislation. "I think that if we pass those two bills, the one in the Senate and the one in the House, then we'll have the momentum to do what we really have to do. We have to do this, this has to be achieved," Franken said while referring to health care reform. "Even though we have health care, high quality health care and lower costs in Minnesota, there's a broken system," Franken said. "We have to make sure that everyone is covered and that if you get sick you're not in danger of going bankrupt."
